Healthy Workplaces - it's good business

In every company or organisations numerous risks are present which can endanger the health of its employees. This could be an accident involving one of the machines, exposure to dangerous substances, repetitive strain injuries… All these can cause outages of staff and a throttled production. Then there are still the costs for repairs and healthcare. Not to mention the danger to your reputation.

Safety at work - it’s up to the boss

In many countries employers are required by law to provide safe and healthy workplaces. Apart from legal considerations, it also makes sense from the economic perspective to keep employees healthy and motivated.

To achieve this, many organisations are already using the instrument of risk assessment. Often considereable effort is put into this process, combined with a large paper trail.

But what if a risk assessment could be performed with less effort, yet better structured? And what happens if your organisation evolves and you need to keep your documents on safety procedures up to date?

A Risk Assessment enables you to identify risks and tackle them head on!

A Risk Assessment consists of two parts: a list with all the risks in your company and a plan on how to deal with them. These two components allow you to limit the risks to your employees, and thereby also the financial risk.

The questionnaire: centrally defined - answered on site

It is up the the appointed safety and health experts in a large organisation to define a list of all potential risks and create a well-structured questionnaire. But ticking off the individual questions needs to be done on site, and this job usually falls to the respective head of a production facility or chief technician. It is important that the questions are presented in an easy to use tool with a clear structure, so that performing a risk assessment will not be perceived as tedious extra work.

Reducing risks in four steps

These four steps are the best way for reducing the risks:

  • Identification: All potential hazards in the company on the list are answered with Yes or No.
  • Evaluation: All found hazards are assessed for their priority.
  • Action Plan: Measures are defined on how to tackle the risks: who will do what and until when?
  • Report and keep it up-to-date: The current state of your risk assessment and the action plan can be downloaded at any time.

The Online Prevention Kit* in Action

Step 1: Identification

The Occupational Safety and Health experts of your organisation have created a questionnaire for all hazards (via the the built-in content management system). Now the individual heads of the different departments can go answer the questions based on the situation on site.

Identification - evaluation - estimated priority

In this process, it is sometimes much easier to stand directly in front of a machine or production facility, rather than sitting at the desk back in the office. Therefore the questionnaire can be answered just as easily on a smartphone or tablet device - no extra app needs to be installed!

Step 2: Evaluation

It is up to the creators of the questionnaire to define how the priority for each risk should be set:

  • Calculated: Based on the answers for frequency, probability and severity
  • Estimated: A simple choice between “low”, “medium” and “high”
  • Pre-set as “high”: For hazards that are marked as especially important
  • Skipped: In this case, the content creators must set the priority beforehand

Identification - via smartphone

You can interupt your risk assessment at any time during any phase, and pick up where you left off next time. All your replies are kept, but only you have access to them!

Step 3: Action Plan

To tackle the risks that have been identified, an action plan is created. For every hazard, one or more measures can be defined - in other words, an instruction on what to do, who is responsible and until when the measure should be completed. Optionally, every measure can also be assigned a budget.

This will enable you to deal with your hazards, one by one.

Step 4: Reporting - Keep it up to date

Improvements are never finished! After implementing the plan you discuss its progress with your employees every year. If you make changes in the company, the risk assessment needs to be adjusted, too. So, if you have finished your (first) risk assessment, you have started to improve the health and safety standards in your company. And you will have provided thorough documentation on the results to all involved parties.

Python and Plone consultancy

Experience with a wide range of technical solutions over the years has convinced us to specialise in a particular technology stack. We use Linux and Python as the basis of all our solutions. Design and usability

This framework allows a designer to create a fully working prototype without any server side code. Your team can click through this prototype at an early stage in the process, giving us a chance to iron out misunderstandings and explore additional ideas before we start working on the server side implementation. This approach is invaluable for ensuring we are working in the right direction and collecting feedback. We also take considerations such as accessibility and support for mobile platforms into account during this stage so that we work towards a comprehensive solution. Once the prototype phase is complete, we don’t throw it away. We develop the server side code to hook into the prototype. This ensures that you get the exact user experience you expect. It’s also worth noting that since we already use a modern and user-focused CMS as the basis of our systems, a custom design is not always necessary or appropriate.

We build Open Source Software because we understand the power of working together effectively. By sharing the code we write, and by using the code others write in an open manner we can improve the collective code base together. The constant refinements and enhancements feed back directly to our customers. Since more developers are familiar with the code, there is a large pool of talented developers we can draw from. There is no licence fee associated with using the software. Are you our next UX and Design Engineer?

We are looking for a UX Engineer specialising in Design and Javascript.

At you will work closely with our design team to translate concepts into living, breathing prototypes. Your primary responsibilities are analysis, design and implementation of software projects connected with Python and Plone backends.
